Born in New York City, Vandross was heavily influenced with music by his mother, father and one of his sisters being singers themselves.

Spawned from the famous musical Winans family, younger siblings Be Be (Benjamin) and Ce Ce (Priscilla) formed a gospel duo and debuted as part of The PTL Singers on the Christian TV show, The PTL Club.

The sisters of the group, LaTosha and Tamika Scott, were taught to sing at an early age by their father (who was part of an R&B group in seventies) in the church and at talent shows throughout the Atlanta area.

Both growing up in Dallas, they met each other while taking piano lessons at an early age.

From the small city of Hamilton, Ohio, Roger Troutman and his brothers (which included Larry, Lester and Terry under the band name, Lil’ Roger and His Fabulous Vels) began their musical careers recording music for their own private label, but only released one album.
