The sisters of the group, LaTosha and Tamika Scott, were taught to sing at an early age by their father (who was part of an R&B group in seventies) in the church and at talent shows throughout the Atlanta area.

They met the other members of the group, Kandi Burruss, Tamera Coggins-Wynn and Tameka Cottle at a performing arts high school in a suburb of Atlanta. Then, Coggin-Wynn left and the group became a quartet. They were discovered by producer Jermaine Dupri at a music festival. He signed them to his So So Def record imprint and debuted the group at one of his birthday party in 1991.

Their debut album, Hummin’ Comin at ‘Cha, was released two years later. It featured the hit singles, “Just Kickin’ It” and “Understanding” and the album certified platinum.
